What Will This Course Bring You?
- You will analyze the electromagnetic principles and thermal dynamics underlying MIG welding arcs, understanding how electrical parameters translate into heat input and penetration characteristics for different material thicknesses.
- You will evaluate workplace hazards specific to welding environments and implement comprehensive safety protocols including proper ventilation management, electrical safety procedures, and correct selection and inspection of personal protective equipment including auto-darkening helmets, welding jackets, respiratory protection, and leather gauntlet gloves.
- You will configure industrial MIG welding machines by interpreting parameter charts, setting wire feed speeds, adjusting voltage outputs, calibrating gas flow rates, and selecting appropriate drive roll tensions and contact tip sizes for specific wire diameters.
- You will distinguish between shielding gas compositions—including pure argon, argon-CO2 blends, and straight carbon dioxide—and correlate gas selection with specific base materials, transfer modes, and weld appearance requirements; you will also classify electrode wire classifications (ER70S-6, ER70S-3, etc.) and match wire chemistry to base metal properties.
- You will prepare weld joints through proper edge preparation techniques, beveling angles, fit-up tolerances, and cleaning protocols; you will design joint configurations including butt joints, lap joints, T-joints, and corner joints appropriate for specific loading conditions and material thicknesses.
- You will execute consistent, uniform beads in flat (1G/1F) and horizontal (2G/2F) positions, controlling bead width, reinforcement height, and penetration through proper gun manipulation, travel speed, and work angle maintenance.
- You will apply vertical position welding strategies (3G/3F) using both vertical-up and vertical-down progression techniques, managing gravity effects on the molten pool and adjusting parameters to prevent sag, undercut, and lack of fusion defects.
- You will demonstrate overhead position welding (4G/4F) competency, developing arm positioning and body mechanics that maintain steady torch angles while managing falling spatter and controlling weld pool fluidity against gravitational forces.
- You will adapt welding parameters and techniques for extreme thickness variations, applying pulsed spray transfer and stitch welding methods to prevent burn-through on thin gauges while managing heat buildup and interpass temperatures on thick materials requiring multiple passes.
- You will identify weld defects including porosity, undercut, incomplete penetration, overlap, and cracking through visual inspection and root cause analysis, then implement corrective adjustments to voltage, wire speed, travel angle, or technique to eliminate recurring problems.
- You will construct multi-pass welds using advanced weaving patterns—crescent, triangular, and circular motions—to achieve uniform fill passes and cap beads with consistent ripples and proper fusion at joint edges.
- You will assess weld quality against industry standards including AWS D1.1 structural welding codes, evaluating throat dimensions, leg lengths, and visual acceptance criteria applicable to fabrication and construction quality requirements.
